Interpretation
Interpretation of the natural, cultural, and historic values of public conservation lands has been recognised by national parks worldwide to be an effective way of connecting visitors to sites and promoting the collective stewardship and protection of those sites.
In the summer of 2018 I worked with the New Zealand Department of Conservation to establish an Interpretation Programme in Mt Aspiring National Park, with the principal goals being to maximise on-site interaction with visitors and tell the stories of Te Wāhipounamu South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. Our summer programme included guided walks, evening campground talks, scavenger hunts, public talks, and school field trips. Through this work we showed that in-person interpretation is capable of both enriching visitors’ experience, and meeting the management goals of minimising visitor impact and communicating our conservation messages.
